1) Danza Del Molinero, by Manuel De Falla, is an extract from his ballet "El Sombreo de Tres Picos" (The Three Cornered Hat). It's the Farruca characterized by it's dark colors and brooding melody reminiscent of the gypsy.
2) Tango -- Issac Albeniz, a prolific writer for the piano, was a great composer of Spanish music. His works are indicative of his love for the variety of music found in the regions of Spain. This Tango is a fine example of his melodic rhythmical sense. Inspired by Spanish popular music, the "sixth" sense in Albeniz seems to have been the guitar. Perhaps that's why so many of his works lend themselves to transcription.
3) Intermezzo --This beautiful piece of music is an interlude from the Opera Goyescas by Enrique Granados, a fabulous pianist and composer who enjoyed great success throughout Europe. Like Albeniz his music is very Spanish and draws in ideas from the many regions of his native country. Much of Granados's work has been transcribed for the guitar.
4) Oriental -- Danza Espanola #2 by Enrique Granados. The Oriental by Granados is beautifully performed by Baker and Saudargas. The Haunting melody is delicate against a finely woven undercurrent.
5) La Vida Breve -- Manuel De Falla is considered by many to be Spain's greatest composer. Although De Falla was not a prolific composer, his works are superior in their melody, color and texture. De Falla is recognized as a master of orchestration. He could elicit the subtle and sophisticated effects by the simplest of means. La Vida Breve (The Brief Life) is from his Opera by the same name. It exemplifies his individual style. This difficult selection is performed with great energy and excitement by Baker and Saudargas, who capture the dynamic intensity and spirit of a marvelous De Falla composition.
Side 2
1) Souvenir or Russia-- Fernando Sor 1778-1839. Sor was a prolific composer and accomplished guitarist. This work was written for two guitars after his return from Russia to Paris. It begins with an introduction, then theme, seven variations and finale. Some of the melody and rhythms are Russian in character, but the harmonies are traditional. "Souvenir" is an excellent example of Sor's classical style. He had a sense of grandeur in his approach toward the guitar. Often called the Beethoven of the guitar, his works are an important component of the concert guitarist's repertoire.
2) Pavane Pour Infant Defunte-- Maurice Ravel. This sensitive, moving work was written in 1899 and evokes an emotional theme suggestive of a beautiful princess asleep for eternity. Ravel brought fresh ideas to traditional harmony. He and Debussy are the leading exponents of the impressionistic school that flourished during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
